Why Everyone Loves Playing with Slime

Slime isn’t just for kids. It’s a stress relieving sensory phenomenon enjoyed by anyone who touches it. Regardless of your age, playing with slime is a nice break from screens and the digital world. It’s a moment of mindfulness—a realtime ASMR experience bringing mental concentration down to our fingertips.

And those ASMR experiences are doing lovely things in our brains. The areas of your brain that light up when you’re squishing your slime are the same areas that produce feel good hormones like oxytocin. The love hormone, the trust hormone, the hug hormone. There’s a very good reason that slime is part of our culture. It makes us feel good in a safe, reliable way.

Like other fidget toys, slime acts as a cognitive noise canceler. Fidgeting with slime or other soothing textures in a repetitive motion regulates arousal levels and diverts the mind from intrusive or stressful thoughts.

Fidgeting can actually be a good thing for individuals, like school aged kids, who deal with attention fragmentation—a side effect of digital media and hand held phones. Fidgeting with slime while completing homework or tasks requiring deep concentration can focus attention.

Slime may actually be good for your mental health. Grab some slime and, with any luck, you just might find a little peace and serenity.
